For my science friends still around on X: The program for Comparative Genomics of Unicellular Eukaryotes is live! Secure your spot at the meeting by registering before May 4th! comparativegenomics2026.com/…
The day is finally here!! On behalf of all the co-organizers the Comparative Genomics of Unicellular Eukaryotes website is open.
comparativegenomics2026.com
Invited speakers will be added to the website in the coming weeks. Watch this (well, that^) space!
How can a symbiont be located at the center of a host cell while still being an epibiont!?
Please read and be astonished about the symbiosis between Anaerameoba and sulfate-reducing bacteria!
Now out in Nature Communications!

This story started 5y ago with my lab. Spearheaded by fearless 1st authors @theopi and Olivia Leland. Theopi is now a PhD student at @BrownUniversity. Olivia is a physics PhD student at @BrandeisU, a self-taught biologist, and made us love soft matter. A (very long) thread (1/24)
Are you interested to use molecular and microbiological approaches to study DPANN-host interactions? Check out this postdoc position in our team at NIOZ: workingat.nioz.nl/o/postdoc-…
Postdoc position available to work with me, in collaboration with Chris Lane @LaneLabURI, on Nephromyces, the closest non-parasitic, extracellular symbiont relatives of the blood parasites (Plasmodium et al). How did the business of blood parasitism start?

Our new study led by brilliant PhD student Kelsey Williamson (along with many wonderful collaborators), resolves the root of the Eukaryote Tree of Life 🌍🧬 with unmatched precision! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Happy to announce our paper about the GTRpmix model and exchangeability matrices designed for use with profile mixture models for eukaryote and eukaryote archaea data sets is published: academic.oup.com/mbe/advance…
I'm looking for advice on synthesizing a small molecule(<200 Da) organic molecule that is not commercially available. Any advice on companies we could use to synthesize this for us? There are published protocols, but we are not chemists and other extraction methods seem tedious.
Great 🧵 by @andrewjroger summarising the PhD work of @retortacarp characterising another (probably) amitochondriate lineage. The paper has everything! great genomes, the best FeS cluster system, and beautiful images by @PsiWavefunction (check out the bonus preprint at the end).
Can free-living eukaryotes exist without mitochondria? In a new paper from my group led by @retortacarp, we show that the answer is probably yes!

In our new paper at Cell (@CellCellPress), we reveal secrets of how the third form of life, archaea, make energy. We uncover new lineages of hydrogen-using enzymes, both minimal and complex. These help archaea thrive in all sorts of extreme environments. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
.@MicrobialOcean, Alastair Simpson and I are seeking a postdoc to work with us on metabolomics of a fascinating protist-bacterial symbiosis in the Anaeramoebae! drive.google.com/file/d/1dIX…
Cool! We're looking for some help getting set up with freshwater sponge research. We'd love to host a early-career researcher. Interested in learning about protists? Want to share wisdom of sponges? Please get in touch. Maybe @sponge_research@hammarlund_emma know someone?
If you’re working in animal comparative physiology or biomechanics & are within 5 years of setting up your first lab, apply for our ECR Visiting Fellowships & Research Partnership Kickstart Travel Grants. Deadline 3 June

ALT A banner stating 'Are you an early-career researcher within five years of your first appointment to a faculty position? You could be eligible for our new Research Travel Partnership Kickstart Travel Grants.'
Folks making open calls for positions, how are you dealing with AI-generated cover letters? I'm able to recognize the phrases and use AI detectors. How do we evaluate the applicants if they all read eerily the same (since many probably used the ad text as a prompt)?
Where do the electrons go if you're a eukaryote that lives without oxygen? Help us to explore this question as a PhD student @lunduniversity @Biology_LU! We're looking for someone to join us as part of our #Tango2Lund project funded by the ERC. Check out thelabupstairs.online/open-p…
