Heads up SLO County! A heat wave is heading our way starting tomorrow. For tips on how to prepare for excessive heat, visit PrepareSLO.org

High pressure combined with offshore winds will lead to significant warming on Wed, especially for coastal portions of Santa Barbara and SLO Counties. Prepare by avoiding the outdoors during the peak heat of the day, and seek air conditioning. Also look before you lock! #caheat

🚩 UPDATE: The Red Flag Warning has been expanded to include portions of the Bay Area. Critical fire weather conditions are expected through Thursday. Stay prepared, enable emergency alerts, and monitor the latest information from the National Weather Service.
🚩 RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT 🚩 Critical fire weather is expected across portions of the northern Sacramento Valley from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon. Strong north winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation will create conditions where any new fire could spread quickly. Be ready, not reactive. Pack a go bag, make sure emergency alerts are enabled, and take time to prepare your home and family in case an evacuation becomes necessary. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay aware. #RedFlagWarning #ReadyForWildfire #CALFIRE #WildfireSafety #CAwx

Community Update: Mountain Lion Safely Tranquilized and Transported The mountain lion reported in a Santa Monica residential area has been safely tranquilized by a biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. California Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement supported the tranquilization and transportation of the animal. The mountain lion will be evaluated and safely relocated in coordination with wildlife experts, including the National Park Service’s Santa Monica Mountains study area team. We thank the community for its patience, cooperation, and care throughout this response.

Dorothea Lange was born on this day in 1895. "Migrant Mother," widely considered one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century, is the most recognizable shot of a series taken by Lange in March 1936 of the same family of "destitute pea pickers" in Nipomo, California. 🧵

Red Flag Warning does not mean a wildfire has started. It’s a weather alert that tells us conditions are right for a fire to start easily and spread quickly: dry vegetation, low humidity, warm temperatures, and strong winds. If you live in California, think of it as a ā€œhigh fire risk dayā€ where even a small spark can turn into a fast-moving wildfire. Homeowners should prepare by moving anything that can burn inside or away from the home. On Red Flag Warning days, avoid ALL activities that can create sparks—like mowing dry grass, dragging chains, or using heavy equipment outdoors. See smoke or fire? Call it in right away. #OneLessSpark #ReadyForWildfire #RedFlagWarnings #CAwx

The Golden Gate Bridge opened to the public for the first time on this day in 1937. About 200,000 people paid 25Ā¢ to walk the bridge, equal to about $5.75 in today's dollars. The next day it opened to cars. This footage is from the Prelinger Archives, acquired by the Library in 2002.
