Man I left the convention ecstatic and very optimistic about the future! If this trend continues it will be very easy for me to lead our church into even greater giving and participation! And btw, our church is primarily growing with young families. It’s our biggest demographic. It’s wild some of the perspectives I’ve seen on SBC after the convention. I think it is not a reflection of how normal every day Southern Baptists feel, that are the main driving force of the convention.
In the past, I have attended the SBC national conference and commented on what I saw. Even in years when I did not attend, I made comments, given that the Southern Baptists discipled me and have been an important part of my life. There are dear people I care about who are in that denomination. This year I did not feel the energy or urge to make such comments. The denomination is on a downswing, and some of the action they are engaging in will facilitate that downswing. I do not say this with the glee I see some of the more progressieve Christian have had. It is a congregation that is having trouble attracting younger individuals, and it is taking steps that reinforce some of the dysfunctions that have emerged within that denomination. There are other vibrant expressions of conservative Christianity, especially within the nondenominational spaces that I see as deserving our attention today. I think they deserve our attention more than what is happening at the SBC.
