10 years ago, the government introduced shared parental leave. It was hoped this would allow dads to play a more prominent role in fatherhood.
But new analysis shows it's a scheme which is "completely broken" and "failing working families".

In 2022 Finland reformed parental leave to give both parents 160 days of paid leave to use before their child turns two.
In the UK dads and co-parents get just two weeks paid at half the minimum wage.

Paternity policy should support dads and co-parents to be equal partners when it comes to raising children.
But rather than supporting, current policy is holding parents back; whether in parliament or elsewhere.

Two weeks is enough time to read a book or two.
Two weeks is enough time to binge watch a series on Netflix.
Two weeks is not enough time for paternity leave, to start forming a bond with your child and supporting your partner.

It’s great that more dads qualify for paternity leave, but it still remains unaffordable for many.
Dads and co-parents get just two weeks paid at £184.03 per week. This is 50% of weekly pay on minimum wage.
The maths don’t add up.
