Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder of relating and communicating. The ones interested in an active social life have some the highest rates of co-morbid anxiety disorders. The better someone is at “reading the room” the less likely autism is the most accurate diagnosis.
Autistic people aren't bad at reading the room. They're bad at pretending they didn't. A neurotypical notices something uncomfortable and smooths over it. An autistic person calls it out whether overtly or through actions. That's not a social deficit. Its more like a social threat, which is why it gets pathologized.
