Ok coach, fine, but how? Some tools for developing this skill: 1️⃣ focus on what you can control rather than the many things outside of your control. The whims and levers that move this world are strong. Don’t bother with what you can’t manage, deal with what you can
Mental toughness is the ability to dictate your mood and behavior regardless of your external circumstances

When I think of the 2026 Knicks, I’ll think of Brunson’s clutch barrage and OG’s tip first. But after of that, I’ll think of this play. It’s everything I love about basketball, a team selflessly solving a seemingly unsolvable problem. The beautiful game. x.com/SamQuinnCBS/status/206…

Said to my wife that this Knicks run is connecting several (seemingly) distinct generations of fans. 1. The 20/30 somethings whose fandom started just after the ‘99 team- never really saw the team do anything 2. 40/50 somethings (I’m here)- saw the finger roll miss…

the Charles Smith layups, MJ, etc. Tasted success but never could get over the hump. 3. 60/70 somethings: saw and remember Clyde and co., waiting to see something similar since. We are all meeting again now, pleased. Just one more. Please! 0-0.

How many times have we heard @nyknicks Coach Mike Brown say “I’ve got to help them X” instead of “they have to X” ?? Answer: many times. Leadership comes in many forms. This is servant leadership.
Asked Mike Brown what the gap was between the Knicks’ desired process in Game 3……and their reality: “I gotta help them a little bit better on the fly…” “There were a lot of times where the decisions weren’t made quick last night”

Not a savior, not a star, just wants to win. If you are building the psychological profile of the best leader possible, you’d build JB

Jalen Brunson (@jalenbrunson1) has the @nyknicks in the #NBAFinals and is playing like he's the mayor of New York. 🏙️ He credits a large part of his remarkable run to the belief the organization entrusted within him, and explains how belief is the most special gift 🎁 a leader can give: 💸 Belief becomes borrowed confidence. Long before people fully trust themselves, they often trust the expectations of someone they respect. Great organizations don’t just evaluate potential, they lend the certainty of their belief systems and processes until the individual can carry it on their own within their own habits and actions. 🔺 Telling someone “I believe in you” creates psychological safety. Showing them you believe in them after missed shots, bad games, or public failure empowers agency. Anyone can support confidence when outcomes are good. Trust becomes transformational when it survives AND surfaces in adversity. ♥️ The strongest teams are built on mutual investment. When a coach keeps pushing the chips in on a player during hard moments, belief stops being motivational language and becomes relational proof. That alignment connects both people to the mission at a deeper level, because success and failure are no longer experienced alone. A player will eventually BECOME the story the people they trust keep telling them about themselves. So leadership is the responsibility of speaking LIFE and BELIEF so consistently, and proving it so relentlessly, that doubt no longer sounds true.

You make the KAT trade and bring in a Mike Brown to explore your ceiling — this has to be what that looks like. This has to be the best case scenario of that unfolding. Don’t hold the line at good. Explore your ceiling. Go for it @nyknicks #knicks

In this moment I’m reminded of why I love the game of basketball. In part; the connection that grew with my mother, by way of a shared favorite basketball team. #Knicks

What jumps off the page time and again with @nyknicks Head Coach Mike Brown? Humility. A servant leader. Values mental performance. Seasoned. Battle-tested. Open. A leader who seeks diverse perspective and keeps the final word. A modern leader. #Knicks 🧢tip @krispursiainen
Mike Brown on if he enjoys the playoffs: "I try to. Sometimes it's hard. I keep reminding myself, just- be present, be present, be present, be present, be present. That helps a bit. Family enjoys it, friends enjoy it. I say to be present, be present to kind of, sort of enjoy it with them. Your emotions really fluctuate during this time, at times it's hard."
