Tiny bacilli seen on sputum Gram stain. Its growth satellites around S. aureus on blood agar, and it grows well on chocolate 🍫 agar. Pfieffer mistakenly thought it caused influenza when he discovered it, which is why “influenza” is in its name. 🧫🔬Haemophilus influenzae🔬🧫

🔬Classic Gram stain morphology🔬 🕷️Spidery gram-positive bacilli🕷️ Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes 📸 Pictured is a blood 🩸culture 🧫 that was contaminated with these bacteria from the skin. It can cause infection; C. acnes is a common cause of shoulder PJI.
