In addition to the aforementioned charges, Alexander Smirnov — the criminal in question — pleaded guilty on unrelated tax evasion charges after he concealed millions in income. Smirnov was the one who claimed to the FBI that the head of Ukrainian energy company Burisma told him that he paid President Joe Biden and his son Hunter $5 million. The absurd lie became a hinge-point for the MAGA probe into the Biden family. Smirnov confessed that he provided "false derogatory information" about the Bidens. Republicans, always quick to spread lies about their political enemies, credulously gobbled up his tale. Prosecutors reached an agreement with Smirnov for him to serve 48 to 72 months in prison.
