Five takeaways from day one at the Sunningdale Foursomes:
1 - The format delivers. The unique handicap system means club golfers, elite amateurs, and tour pros all have a chance. Hats off to the Butteriss siblings for taking Charley Hull and Georgia Hall down the last—while giving them two shots.
2 - The course is playing remarkably firm and the greens are immaculate. Could be May if there were leaves on the trees.
3 - Spectating is a dream. No ropes, the hut is open, and you can walk the fairways chatting with everyone from Martin Slumbers to Gareth Bale.
4 - Foursomes is brutal. Quick greens, tucked pins, and today's cold breeze mean even bogey golf can get the job done. Par golf could reign supreme for the next few rounds at least.
5 - Sunningdale’s sausage sandwich? Still elite, still top 3.
This morning’s blog post from friend of the Jar, James Burns, captures exactly what makes this event so special:
