☀️ NOW OPEN ☀️ Solar is our new free display showcasing cutting-edge projects exploring the role of design in our relationship with the sun. Bringing together the work of the four 2023/24 Design Researchers in Residence; April Barrett, Eliza Collin, Jamie Gatty Irving and Freya Spencer-Wood, they aim to offer new insights on how the sun shapes our landscapes, our homes and our communication in the context of the climate emergency. Their research takes us from the wet landscapes of northern Scotland to the hot interior of an Irish data centre; it traces microscopic interactions between flowers and their pollinators, and the movement of the sun across the quiet garden extensions of the Surrey suburbs. This is the latest display from our long-running research residency Design Researchers in Residence, Future Observatory’s annual programme that supports design-led thinkers to spend a year at the museum developing responses to the climate emergency. Why did OpenAI use Scarlett Johansson's voice? As Jessa Lingel & I discuss in our journal article on AI agents, there's a long history of using white women's voices to “personalize” a technology to make it feel safe and non-threatening while it is capturing maximum data. 🧵

As Israeli forces advance into Rafah’s densely populated centre, bombing indiscriminately and targeting what little aid/medical infrastructure remains in Gaza, they are forcing the ~1.5m civilians in Rafah into a ‘humanitarian zone’ with no functioning medical infrastructure.

What an astonishing campaign. I’m in awe of everyone who gave their time, energy, resources and votes. When recent GE polling in the North East shows Labour with 60 % of the vote, most commentators thought Labour would walk this. The fact that we got 126,652 votes here, nearly as much as Tories, Green, Lib Dem and Reform put together, with no Westminster party machine behind us, shows something is happening in the North East. This was a people powered campaign and it doesn’t die with just one election result. Tens of thousands of people voted for a different type of politics. There is a huge appetite for pragmatic transformative policies that reduce inequality and treat people with respect. We are building a movement and we’re staying right here.

Launched in 1980, Margaret Calvert’s graphic design for the Tyne and Wear Metro is still in use across the network today, so it’s great to see her pay a visit! Whether via road, rail, air or sea, her work over six decades has helped shape the visual identity of modern Britain.
The pioneering graphic designer who created our famous yellow logo – Margaret Calvert - has made a visit to the region to see her iconic typeface on the network. Read: nexus.org.uk/news/item/graph…

Famine – even in northern #Gaza – could still be averted. We need: 🔴 An immediate stop to the fighting 🔴 Full access for aid organizations to reach the entire civilian population A declaration of #famine means it’s too late. We must act now to save thousands of lives.

Protesting against the mass slaughter of civilians is not a threat to democracy. The real threat to democracy is a government that crushes our rights and silences our solidarity. Our movement is made up of all faiths and backgrounds, united by a belief in a more peaceful world.
