In 2019, an estimated 1.27 million deaths worldwide were directly caused by AMR, and AMR played a part in nearly 5 million deaths. US healthcare costs linked to infections from six of the biggest AMR threats total more than $4.6 billion annually,  with $1.9 billion of these costs borne by Medicare, says @hboucher3 to @GOPHELP and @HELPCmteDems.

Long ago, the field of ID could have carved out paid niches in the interpretation of cultures, susceptibilities, etc. (like other specialties do). However, none of that happened and today the specialty can't attract sufficient fellows because other fields are more lucrative.
Because, as @ACasadevall1 taught me years ago, decades ago the ID community failed to work with government and regulators to protect the special expertise unique to ID training. Other specialties were much more proactive in carving out their controlled expertise.

This study looks to be quite well done; the authors say that “the results are not generalizable to patients who are immunocompromised”, in whom this can be a devastating, life-threatening infection. I have not had trouble giving four doses of ivermectin.
