And as with all things, if you prefer to drink caffeine right when you wake up go for it. I promise not to explain the advantages of doing the opposite in the afternoon while you’re groggy.

Caffeine merely blocks the adenosine receptor, but doesn’t clear adenosine. Allow the first hour or two of your day to clear adenosine with light and movement. Then drink caffeine. An exception is if you exercise right after you get up. In that case drink caffeine on waking.
There have been many questions about how a delay in caffeine for about an hour or two in the morning after waking can help offset the later crash and lead to overall energy increases. It has to do with the ability of viewing sunlight, exercise, and cortisol to reduce adenosine.
