Good morning, Tiger fans.
Scott Harris has a huge problem. And the funny part is, he created it.
When you give $30 million to a player before he ever steps foot in the big leagues, and then hand out $150 million to a kid with about a week of major-league service time, you’ve set the market inside your own clubhouse.
Now enter Riley Greene and Dylan Dingler.
Riley Greene has actually done it in the big leagues.
Dylan Dingler was supposed to be Jake Rogers’ backup. Instead, he’s turning into one of the best catchers in baseball. He’s handling a pitching staff, throwing runners out, hitting bombs, driving in runs, and playing the most demanding position on the field at an All-Star level.
So what’s the plan now?
Because if potential is worth $150 million, what is proven production worth?
If a week in the big leagues is worth $150 million, what’s an All-Star catcher worth?
What’s Riley Greene worth?
What’s Tarik Skubal worth?
Maybe the answer is simple: pay them.
After all, we’re constantly told the owners have to be careful, payrolls are tight, and labor negotiations are looming.
Interesting strategy, though. Hand out massive contracts before players establish themselves, then act shocked when proven stars want to get paid.
What a predicament.
Almost like somebody volunteered to create it.
But hey, if the owners are really hurting that badly, maybe they should open the books and show us. Because from where I’m sitting, there always seems to be money available when they want to spend it.
Let’s see what Mr. Harris and Mr. Ilitch do next.
