Has any team, not just Texas, in the modern history of sports done the same thing? Literally the reason why this is so explosive is because every other instance of athletes being caught betting on sports, especially their own teams, ended with highly punitive consequences and the universities/teams accepted it for the good of the sport. This is the first time that is not the case to my knowledge. But please educate me if I’m unaware.

I’m not saying they aren’t doing things to aid his rehab. But let’s not be naive. Mental health is a byproduct not the impetus. It feels more like they’re protecting their investment and getting him on the field. Do you think they’d be doing all this for an average student at the university who gambled away his tuition due to an addiction? My guess is they would politely tell them to take some time away and come back when they have more money. No gambler’s anonymous or group therapy. Just hard consequences.

Really caring about mental health would focus on rehabilitation. Focusing on getting back on the field is self-serving. Clearly Tech is more focused on the latter.

Not a stretch that one can believe gambling by active players is bad for the long-term integrity of sports (so consequences should reflect that) AND still plan to watch all the games in the fall. Both come from a love of the game.

Every single person that is tweeting “Texas Tech has ruined college sports” is going to watch all the college football games this fall, including Sorsby’s debut.
They don’t actually believe TTU has ruined anything, they are just upset a national title contender got better today.

Here’s the deal. I respect the hustle and grind and frustration they aren’t credentialed.
Just know you have flexibility and license to say more than we can.
We have a responsibility and obligation to stick to the facts, vet sourcing BUT I appreciate their access to information and collaboration with a number of them too. I found @BobbyBeltTX this way!
I pray many of you find the end goal but I would also say enjoy your freedom and building your brand in ways people couldn’t when many of us started. I applaud you all.
I just think sometimes we can get annoyed when it’s a whole them vs us narrative. Doesn’t have to be.
Shoutout to all of you. I worked multiple jobs and freelanced myself for years it sucks but I’ve seen it pay off for myself and others so keep going 💕
