It's been 21 years since a commercial plane went supersonic. 31 years since we last built 2 nuclear reactors in a year. And 51 years since we last ventured beyond low-earth orbit. Hard problems like these cannot be solved with one new app. We are living in a world with significant innovation in IT, software, Internet, but much less in everything else. You could say that all these gadgets and devices, they dazzle us but they also distract us from the ways in which our larger surroundings are strangely old. We run cell phones while we’re riding in a 19th-century subway system in New York. In San Francisco, the housing stock looks like it’s from the 50s and 60s: it’s decrepit. And it is incredibly hard to change these things. While we make progress in software capabilities, hardware is strangely stuck.

In the 60s, technology meant computers, but also rockets, supersonic aviation, agriculture, underwater cites, and new medicines. Today, when we use the term technology, it just means information technology. We have a narrow cone of progress around the world of bits: computers, internet, mobile... and it hasn't been enough to take civilisation to the next level. There's so much more than just software.
