I can’t believe it’s already been over 7 years!
Back in Summer 2016, I was an intern at NASA rebuilding the Atmospheric Science Data Center where I was told “you’re working too fast, you need to work slower.” Coming from a blue collar background working on farms, I’d never heard such a thing. I was always taught to work hard, but I learned that day the government has a slightly different philosophy on work😅, the motto was “don’t work yourself out of a job.” And given this job was meant to last all summer and I was on track to get it done in 3 weeks, I figured it’d be best to take their advice so I did just that. I worked slower. I’d rebuild one server, watch some YouTube videos, then rebuild the next.
Well, I went down quite the YouTube rabbit hole and discovered this guy named
@garyvee. And through his
#AskGaryVee Show, I discovered this small creator named
@Casey Neistat. Small, you know, maybe a couple million subscribers lol. He was making a super entertaining YouTube video every single day about what was going on in his life, called a “vlog”, and built an entire community around that. I thought to myself “I can do that.” And so I did. Or at least I tried.
Turns out it wasn’t quite as easy as I’d initially thought lol. I had no idea what I was doing, I made a litany of crappy videos, but I discovered something. I discovered that I actually really enjoy making these videos. Even in working full-time as a full-time student, I made the time to make these videos about my experiences, my journey, as a computer science student and programmer. Then later as an actual software engineer.
Who’d have thought going down that YouTube rabbit hole in between rebuilding servers would lead me to all of this? Creating my own channel, making my own videos, and growing it to a point where 3 years in I’d be able to quit my job and do it full-time? Not me. But I’m sure glad it worked out that way. It’s the best job I’ve ever had.
Now as we enter the last quarter of 2023, the channel is bigger and better than ever. It's opened so many doors I didn't even know existed and has allowed me to meet amazing like-minded individuals in the space like
@KenJee_DS,
@Alex_TheAnalyst,
@LukeBarousse, and the countless others in the programming and data space. Not to mention the amount of emails and comments I’ve received from viewers expressing their gratitude in how I impacted their journey, simply from making some YouTube videos about my experiences. I’m blessed, to say the least.
All of this to say, I appreciate every single person who’s watched even one of my videos. I plan to continue this journey for as long as y’all will let me.
There’s so much more to come that I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks, months, and years on LinkedIn, X, and YouTube. This is my first real X post, by the way, so don’t judge me solely based on this - I’ll get better, I promise.
