It’s the best day of the year - my dad got his first Covid vaccination today. He’s 68, a pulmonologist and ICU physician. Was supposed to retire in April but pushed it to June, then August, then October, then December, and now to April Fools Day 2021.

It’s not over. California is now the epicenter of the crisis, and ICU capacity is reported to be 0% in Orange County where he works. But as I watched the sun rise today, it finally felt the dawn of a new day.

It’s compact and churns a great small 2qt batch. Only annoying thing is the freezer bowl, which you must freeze for at least 8 hours before use and in between uses. Mine lives in my freezer so it’s always ready.

The blog also has recs for a couple other larger and more complex machines if you’re looking for more. Also some starter recipes if you need them - I started sharing some @milkmade’s home recipes at the beginning of covid to help people learn how to make ice cream at home.

VICTORY #43: Trestles Saved Forever For two decades we have fought to protect San Onofre State Beach, including Trestles, from destructive road projects. During our fight to protect this world-class park, we have won many battles—but none as big as this. surfrider.org/coastal-blog/e…

Meet Agnes Marshall, a chef who disrupted the ice cream industry with her exotic flavors... back in the 1880s. Known as the "Queen of Ices", she made flavors like pumpernickel, spinach, foie gras, a Neapolitan mixed with tomatoes. Puts @milkmade to shame! thehustle.co/agnes-marshall-…

A must read.
April 27 was the last time there was a White House coronavirus task force briefing, leaving us with more than a month without regular updates from the group Vice President Mike Pence was tapped to lead. (1/24)

Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben &Jerry’s, is sitting alone atop a blue cooler near the White House. He says he’s seeing where the protests take him today. Unfortunately, he’s out of ice cream. He said people think this an issue for young people, but “it’s not just their issue”

This is a great thread about research-based solutions to diminish police violence. Best and most comprehensive I’ve read so far.
For those who are interested in research-based solutions to stop police violence, here’s what you need to know - based on the facts and data. A thread. (1/x)

Covid-19 is causing blood clots and stroke in people of all ages. Often young people overlook or diminish stroke symptoms so I’m here to remind you of a handy acronym: BE FAST

With stroke, time loss is brain loss. The longer you wait to get medical attention, the more your brain dies. I would know, I’ve had two! Do not overlook these symptoms.

I’m especially glad I closed @milkmade last year, but I do wish we could deliver our ice cream during isolation. Instead, I encourage those who can to make ice cream at home. It’s more magical than sourdough, I promise! I'll be sharing recipes each week to help you get started.
