QA stuff and chair of CycleSheffield. Sheffield should be the ebike capital of the UK. You should get one, they're great.

Essential thread and perspective. The difficulty not addressed being that cars and roads take up so much public space, any attempt to create more space for walking/cycling can be pitted against driving, so even the smallest incremental change can be a struggle.
Cars are great. They give the population huge liberty to move around the country, the countryside & the suburbs with comfort, ease & relative safety. They empower & liberate their users. They can particularly help those with goods to deliver or physical challenges to overcome…

I thought this looking for growth gang sounded exciting to begin with. But they seem to have become bogged down on niche London issues of tidying up tube trains and complaining about old bridges. Perhaps they've confused growth with trolls
"ABSOLUTELY ANTI-GROWTH" Britain should be a country where taxis, buses and ambulances can cross a bridge. Hammersmith Bridge has been shut for SEVEN YEARS. The Government can choose to REOPEN it. We spoke to local residents last week about the impact on them 👇

Sheffield is the largest city in Europe without a single electrified railway. The Midland Mainline electrification would have changed that, but the Govt has now 'paused it'. Meanwhile, £600m has been spent on a fare freeze that will mainly benefit commuters in the South East.

Crikey. 93 in Sheffield. 19,000 in London.

We’ve mapped the mansion tax. You can see who's paying - which constituency, which postcode - and how many "mansions" are near you. Full interactive map here 👇

Oh wait it's far more extreme in constituency view: about 50 in Sheffield, over 50,000 in London

Rare you get so close to an explicit "electrifying railways [in the Midlands and North of England] isn't affordable because we've got to invest in and around London" line. But there it is.

Bus and tram improvements usually involve pushback because of bus gates, roadworks, more loss of on-street car parking etc. Benefits and wider public buy-in comes many years down the line at the speed we do things. We need to provide these better choices much faster!

Crikey. Looks like Leeds really is looking at a workplace parking levy. As a business owner in central Leeds, and as a citizen of Leeds, I think this would be a very good thing and I hope our city keeps going and is backed by the UK government. yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/ala…

Perhaps this would still have happened if @LouHaigh was still transport minister, but I doubt it. Levelling up plans cancelled once again

And note that Sheffield remains the largest city in Europe (except for Tirana, Capital of Albania) without a single electric train service and has now returned to there being no ongoing plans to change that. As moany Northerners predicted and were told to stop being grumpy about.

@peterwalker99 Did your colleague @josephharker chat with you to fact-check some of these opinions before submitting it to be published? I expected a serious discussion on all the different perspectives from different cultural groups within the area. But this is lazy tropes

The entire paragraph starting 'Residential roads have been cut off' is pure factually incorrect culture war clickbait, so it's especially off to pronounce 'There’s no “culture war” here'. Please argue using facts - not literally incorrect opinions. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

These are some of the issues we overcome in events like the CycleSheffield Big Ride/Kidical Mass ride in May and the monthly Sheffield Mass Cycle Rides, next one this Easter Sunday! kidsonbikessheffield.co.uk/ facebook.com/sheffieldmasscy…

How does this impact local sites like Sheffield Online and @sheffieldtrib ?
I've always opposed the Online Safety Act, but I never realised just how mad it was. Every site that allows users to post content is in scope of the law and is forced to carry out a risk assessment. If the PM wants to cut the cost of regulation, here's an easy place to start.
