This is a good read and I didn't realise how much Northern Ireland has overperformed post-Brexit. NI economic output up 12% since Q4 2019 vs 5.2% for UK.
Recovering from Thatcherism. > how Thatcherism left Britain the poorest country in Northern Europe, how a return to competition could fix it, and why "just crush the NIMBYs" is a really bad plan for boosting British growth. By me. Just now. tomforth.co.uk/recoveringfro…

A quiet day in AI, * Good blog post about how we're all getting automated. * Good blog post about how AI coding doesn't work. Still. Not even close. * Good podcast on how we don't know. * US gov. blocks leading models. * Two Chinese open models and new method us catch up anyway.

And the IT service of Rio de Janeiro municipal government release a model that would have been world leading a year ago. Oh and SpaceX or something, but I haven't had time for that yet.

*pays attention* --- made by the who now?
Alibaba Qwen3.7 slowly fading into irrelevance at the frontier due to proprietary stance. In it's place we have Minimax M3 and... *checks notes* Rio 3.5 397b, made by the municipal IT company of Rio de Janeiro's city government. huggingface.co/prefeitura-ri…

Palantir's involvement in UK government digital delivery is interesting because I have almost no issues with their moral positions and other actions. But I am still pretty sceptical of their involvement.

Doesn't feel good if we really don't have that capacity within Britain and British companies though. And Palantir do.

Presumably this Fable 5 stuff seals the deal on Palantir getting booted out of the NHS. No hard feelings, but we can't be outsourcing core tech to the USA given this surely?

My hot take on this AI export control story is that I don't know how far behind the open source (Chinese) models are and will be and I don't know far Mistral (French) both open and closed source models are and will be.

Kimi 2.7 ranked 2nd after Fable 5 and before GPT-5 xhigh We have re-run our ErdosBench smoke test on 14 problems with Kimi 2.7, Qwen 3.7 Max, Grok 4.3 and compared it with the top performers from previous runs. Kimi 2.7 is amazingly good. More below.

I think this would be the spiciest move. Europe and China could agree to join forces on AI. ASML cancel maintenance contracts and all new deliveries to the USA, and start exporting to China. Quickly replace Cuda from the supply chain with a Chinese equivalent,...

This is brilliant.
The Victorians built the swimming pools. The postwar generation built the youth clubs. Nobody built the endowment. We’ve spent 150 years spending down the inheritance. Here’s how we never do that ever again. Local Government For Growth: The Civic Trust Fund Model 📖⬇️

A few from the right in replies demanding I set out more clearly a "theory of growth". Competition. Markets. Invisible hands. Part of the Thatcher legacy is the need even on the right for a big central plan. A big expert-led strategy. We've got to snap out of it.

"if other big cities want to win, by cutting tax, or investing in better transport, or permitting more growth, they should be allowed to. Both public and private investment should flow to where it would generate the greatest return according to that desire to win." > that's it.
