generated 53 of NY’s 94 points in a 105 ORTG game, 9 unassisted FGM in the halfcourt, all on 67 TS%…this is simply one of the best individual closing performances in playoff history take a bow Brunson

of the many compelling cases Nile makes below, the Vanderbilt redemption arc is my favorite a fascinating example of why it’s pertinent to build rosters around strengths (Vando’s OREB ability) instead of attempting to cover up weaknesses (negative spacing impact)

My @thehwcollectlve debut: No Start. No Now. No Future? Game Over? Brandon Boston Jr., Sharife Cooper, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Dalen Terry, and Jarred Vanderbilt have shared promising, imperfect career beginnings. How much can be expected moving forward? Star-impact outcomes?

Jalen Brunson is handling the ball on 48% of Knicks possessions, dribbling 5 times per touch, and dominating the ball. The result: 41% eFG, -20 offensive rating, and a 1:1 assist-to-turnover. That's not a star carrying his team. That's a star suffocating it s/o @dlee4three

the other examples of negative BPM and /- in a 3-game playoff span with a 30 USG% all underscore the futility of high-usage hoops w/o turnover suppression & efficiency this Knicks team is too talented to pigeonhole themselves into Brunson helio-ball
Through the 1st 3 games of the Finals, Jalen Brunson is averaging a 38 USG%, 48% On-Ball%, nearly double the amount of touches as the next Knick, 5.57 sec per touch, 5.3 dribbles per touch...all while posting a 41.4 eFG% and a -20 ORTG swing w/ just 13 assists to 13 TOs.

Harper's scored 15 points on 12 transition poss in the Finals , 1.25 PPP is about league avg playoff PPP on the break (~1.2 PPP) He's been stellar in the open court for the most part, but the Spurs O can't afford to squander even a few of his opportunities

harper in transition in the playoffs: 78 possessions, 76.2% TS, 14.2 rTS, 1.30 PPP, 2nd in Points over Expectation

a Harper HB dive vs OG in transition is 0/3 but it's also probably more effective in a larger sample size the Spurs' halfcourt offense can't tell Harper to not be aggressive but I'd definitely try and encourage him to hunt everyone BUT OG

at rim misses/blocks juice an opponent’s ORTG more than anything but turnovers that factor is multiplied by several degrees when that miss/block comes in transition opponent transition rate influence should be weighed as highly as a player’s impact on their team’s turnover rate
obviously Harper deserves grace for even being viable in a playoff setting as a rookie BUT he’s been uncannily skilled at generating 4 to 5-point swings for SAS’ opponents with Iill-advised transition rim attacks those are turnovers too!!

discussed a mock contract negotiation for Trae w/ my law school friend a few months ago, this was essentially the deal we came to a consensus on a 2 1 at ~ 25% of the cap is reminiscent of the FVV deal w/ HOU, but Trae’s rep will keep that last year fully guaranteed
Early projections on the likely ballpark for Trae Young's new deal is three-years, $120 million, per @TheSteinLine (open.substack.com/pub/marcst…)

HOU and WAS are built with the the same premise but you probably couldn't choose more drastically different vets to mature your young team with a sizable portion of the value HOU extracted from those contracts had to have been the added defensive tenacity grit & mentality

what's the offensive equivalent to dillon brooks' hustle impact all the Wiz Kids get a ISO ppp boost? how much does elite table setting/a heavy spoonfed diet accelerate development? x.com/dlee4three/status/1996…

Dillon Brooks has completely changed how the Suns are competing on the defensive end, the 3rd such dramatic turnaround in his career feels like I can make a legitimate case for him as a T30 player so far

the contract itself will be super informative but I’m also fascinated to see if WAS can achieve the “culture setting” HOU was able to squeeze out of Brooks/FVV’s bloated contracts is it viable to make a team more serious without establishing a defensive backbone?

96 mins of tape of NY tagging Wemby with guys directly involved in the action should have SAS primed with some counters (twirls, flares, not having Castle initiate as much, etc.) also think the Knicks could bait the Spurs into some free steals, i’m so excited to watch tn
During the first two games of the Finals, Victor Wembanyama has rolled 47 times as the screener in pick actions. At least one of New York's off-ball defenders has tagged Wemby on 27 of those rolls, allowing him just two touches on those plays and only one point.
