So, Twitter appears to have killed third-party apps. That's it for me, I'm done. I might check in from time to time to read @fesshole, but that's it. @robmanuel please migrate to Mastodon.

If you're thinking this isn't a good place to be anymore and you're looking to move, I've set up my own server in the other place. I intend to keep it small and limit it to people I know, either online or in real life - you can find a link in my bio, or DM me for more info.

I've seen a lot of people asking "why does everyone think Twitter is doomed?" As an SRE and sysadmin with 10 years of industry experience, I wanted to write up a few scenarios that are real threats to the integrity of the bird site over the coming weeks.

I have my own Mastodon instance up and running and now I think I've got the hang of things, I'm opening it up to people I know - the idea is to keep it small and cosy. If we know each other, and you're looking for a home in the Mastodon world, check it out masto.dopiaza.org/

That’s a lovely fantasy to have but let’s just investigate it for a second. (1) Twitter has a fairly unusual set of engineering needs in a bunch of areas - and a bunch of necessary institutional knowledge that is just walking out the door.

Everyone on social media should know about the Illusory Truth Effect If you see something repeated enough times, it seems more true. Multiple studies show that it works on 85% of people. Worse, it still happens even if the information isn't plausible & even if you know better.

This is a good summary from a Brit living in the US. Well worth reading if you’re at all confused by UK politics right now (and really, who isn’t?)

For Americans confused about how British politics works, here’s a very quick overview: Britons don’t vote for a PM, we just vote for our local MPs. They belong to a political party. The party chooses who leads them.

Everyone scoffs at PHP the language, but their documentation kicks everyone's ass because it's loaded with things that aren't obvious. Writers don't discover these things, folks doing the work do.
Apple really should put their docs on GitHub and let people augment the@. It is really tragic.

These are the people choosing the next Prime Minister. “I’m of an age where I don’t really care about saving the planet that much”
Meet the 'normal' Tory members who get to choose the next prime minister

I no longer think of @MargaretAtwood as a novelist. She's a future diarist narrating current events and passing them back down a few decades.
