Screens get a lot of hate.
Screens can be beneficial, when used for the right reasons. And in moderation
Unfortunately, for the majority families, screens aren't being used in moderation.
Recommended daily screen time ranges from 0-3hrs/day depending on age
The daily average for screen use is:
Kids 5-6hrs/day
Teens 8-9hrs/day
Parents 7-8hrs/day
The harms of too much screen time include:
❌Poor sleep
❌Vision problems
❌Lower self esteem
❌Worse mental health
❌Increased risk of ADHD
❌Weaker communication skills
❌Delayed language development
And whats even more unfortunate is that most families aren't using screens for good reasons.
The top 3 uses of screen time for teens are:
Social media/messaging
Youtube/videos
Games/apps
These are passive forms of screen time that have the worst impact on brain health.
And the worst part about screens is they decrease family communication & connection
The reality is that most families need to reduce their screen time.
The good news is parents have the power to make it happen.
Here are some tips to reduce family screen time.
1. Reduce YOUR screen time
Let’s get this one out of the way because none of the other stuff matters without this.
Parents are the leaders of their family. If you are spending hours a day on a screen, then your kids will copy this behaviour and want to spend their time on a screen.
Reducing your kids screen time while you spend hours a day on your phone is hypocritical.
If parents aren't living their message, their kids won't listen. Period.
Screens are a part of life. Just keep them out of family time.
Schedule time for your screens. If something urgent pops up (life happens) then take the call/text in another room.
Otherwise, avoid screen time during family time.
2. Reduce the number of screens in your home
Out of sight out of mind!
If your child's environment is filled with TVs, iPads & smart phones, they will gravitate towards them
If you're trying to lose weight, you get junk food out of your house.
Same concept with screens
3. Non-screen activities
Reducing screen time means everyone will have spare time to fill
Fill the family environment with fun & stimulating activities:
Lego
Books
Crafts
Puzzles
Colouring
Trampoline
Boardgames
Dress-up gear
Remote control cars
Baseball, football, hockey sticks
Have plenty of alternatives to fill family time with fun!
4. Create healthy boundaries
Screens are a part of life, completely getting rid of them is likely not an option
So its important to establish things like:
-Set times for screens
-Set times when screens arent allowed
-Screen rules such as no screens before school or after dinner
-No screen zone, like the dinner table or bedrooms
This helps kids development expectations and helps them feel like they have some control over the situation
⭐️This only works if the whole family adheres to the boundaries
5. Monitor Screen Time
Screens are a part of life. When kids get screen time, make sure its mostly active screen time.
Beware of things like:
❌Mindlessly scrolling social media
❌Apps & video games with violence & sex
❌Messaging with other kids who have uncontrolled access to screens & internet
Aim for active screen time and learning activities such as:
✅ Family movie
✅ Messaging/video chat with friends & family
✅ Videos and content geared towards learning
Having clear boundaries and keeping lines of communication open help ensure healthy screen time
