So inspiring!
“My parents could barely read or write. It’s been quite a journey, science allows you to do it.” New laureate Omar Yaghi was in the middle of changing flights when we reached him, just after he heard that he had been awarded the 2025 #NobelPrize in Chemistry. In this interview we speak about his early life as a refugee in Jordan and the overwhelming draw of the beauty of chemistry: “I set out to build beautiful things and solve intellectual problems.” Listen now:

SEEG analysis is time consuming. Numerous features from interictal, preictal, ictal, postictal and results related to cortical stimulation are available. Which one should be prioritized when defining the resection margins? Spoiler: it includes the gamma-spikes!
🚨 Our multicenter study by @dr_chifa on visual #SEEG features in #epilepsysurgery is now out in @ANA_journals @WileyNeuro! 🔎 Key finding: Spatial co-occurrence of gamma-spikes preictal spikes best predicted #seizure freedom! Check it out 👉 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Interestingly, spatial co-occurrence of gamma-spikes and preictal spikes was able to optimally predict seizure outcomes in temporal lobe epilepsy, extra temporal lobe epilepsy, negative MRI patients, positive MRI patients, etc. making it generalizable.

Spatial co-occurrence of only 2 features: gamma-spikes and preictal spikes optimally predicted the surgical outcome.
30
Ictal low voltage fast activity, although an association with surgical outcomes was found (but effect size not strong), has a lower prédictive performance when compared to other single features such as gamma-spikes, preictal spikes.
30
We demonstrated that the seizure onset zone, used by many experts as proxy of the Epileptigenic zone, has a low predictive performance.

This is the first comprehensive study that assessed the performance of numerous features used in clinical practice.

This a multi center study. Thanks to our wonderful collaborators.

What a wonderful discussion session we had this morning! Thank you again for the invitation. It’s such an honor to present my work at your amazing center. Hope I convinced you to look at the spatial co-occurrence of gamma-spikes and preictal spikes 😉.
Please join us for #Epilepsy Grand Rounds with @dr_chifa tomorrow at 8am US eastern. Register using this link: uhhospitals.zoom.us/webinar/… #NeuroX #Neurology #EpilepsySurgery #SEEG #NeurologyRF

Shall we 'rethink' the blueprint for the brain? For nearly a century, Penfield's homunculus shaped our understanding of the motor cortex. From toe to tongue right? Gordon and Dosenbach in the journal Nature elegantly revealed to us that the homunculus is more intricate than we have been thinking all these years. Key Points: - Motor cortex isn't a straight line—it's interspersed with regions integrating movement and cognition. - It is concentric and not linear. - It is a body representation that should reshape our thoughts about the neural map. - There is interrupted mapping meaning that instead of a seamless progression, the motor cortex contains interspersed regions not directly tied to specific body movements. - The authors call them "inter-effector regions," and they alternate with traditional motor regions controlling the foot, hand, and mouth. - It is called the Somato-Cognitive Action Network (SCAN): The inter-effector regions are part of a network called SCAN. - What does SCAN do? Integrates motor functions w/ cognitive processes, such as planning and physiological regulation. - Thus, there is ia more complex interplay between movement and cognition than we had previously imagined. - A final point is the concentric organization: Contrary to the linear arrangement suggested by the original homunculus, the authors found a concentric organization in the motor cortex, w/ the body parts represented in a more circular pattern. My take: It reminds me that the world was flat, until folks realized it was round. This is a paradigm shift in our thinking about the brain. Update the textbooks. Call your friends. Share the news at all the parties you attend. This is big. @ParkinsonDotOrg @FixelInstitute #Neuroscience #BrainMapping #MotorCortex #SCAN #Neuroplasticity @Nature nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
