Nothing like a building evacuation on a Friday to cap off the week. Apparently someone autoclaved a hazardous liquid on our floor (formaldehyde?). There was definitely a weird smell. So much for my sequencing! Glad DNA is stable for a while at room temp π

New preprint out! With the Sabino lab in Brazil, we detail the association of YF disease severity with serum levels of viral NS1 protein and syndecan-1 - providing insight into the role of NS1 in YFV pathogenesis led by Francie and Colin in the lab doi.org/10.1101/2023.06.29.2β¦
#ASV2023 is officially a wrap. What a fantastic meeting made particularly fun by the amazing people I got to reconnect with and meet. Definitely a good reintroduction to conference life after a *long* time away!
One of the coolest parts about #ASV2023 so far has been connecting with fellow @williamandmary alumni. And not just W&M alums, but former Williamson Lab undergraduate researchers!
Such a pleasure reconnecting with Joe (β12) and meeting @itsmelainaj (β21). Kurt taught us well!
#ASV2023 has already been amazing, and weβre not even 24 hours in. So much brilliant science by brilliant researchers. Looking forward to the rest of the conference!
Daugherty Lab trainees have made it to #ASV2023! Come check out our talks tonight and learn about the exciting work weβre doing with @Daugherty_Lab

Congrats to everyone involved, especially force-of-nature first author @BriBerryTea! 1/
I haven't been on Twitter in a minute. To which platform are all the academics migrating? I've loved Twitter for engaging with the virology/immunology/public health communities. Where to next?
Let it be known, the first time I heard Mariah Careyβs βAll I Want For Christmas Is Youβ in 2022 was 9:30 am on November 4. Thanks @underthelenns. #christmas2022#startingearly

So this week I learned that an uncommon side effect of dexamethasone may be persistent, severe hiccups.
On Tuesday morning, I woke up with a sore throat painful enough to get me to urgent care. Rapid strep and flu negative. But an extremely red and swollen throat. 1/n
But then I woke up Wednesday morning and started hiccuping after breakfast, pretty severely. They eventually went away but then came back a few hours later. It happened several more times on Wednesday and has continued for over 48 hours now. 3/n
These episodes are often intense, sometimes lasting over 2 hours, and itβs made it difficult to eat/drink/sleep. By far the strangest drug side effect Iβve ever experienced. I never gave much thought to hiccups until now - this has been so extremely unpleasant! 4/n
