FAMILY VOTING SCANDAL IN BIRMINGHAM
Birmingham city council admits polling station staff saw illegal family voting and faced abuse when trying to stop it
Birmingham city council has admitted that during the may local elections presiding officers at polling stations observed families attempting to vote together in the same booth which is illegal under the ballot secrecy act 2023.
When staff intervened and told groups they must vote separately some complied but others subjected the officers to verbal abuse and aggressive behaviour.
An electoral commission observer also reported instances where presiding officers prevented multiple people entering booths and were subjected to aggressive behaviour on at least one occasion.
The council said in a freedom of information response that staff were occasionally verbally abused but on the whole people complied once they realised it was a legal requirement.
Reform uk has highlighted the admissions as confirmation that family voting is taking place in some communities while Nigel Farage has previously raised the issue with police and called for stronger guidance from the electoral commission.
