Excited to share @JeanSYe_ work now out in @NeuroCellPress! We found that during development, people become more variable in how much they engage recurring brain states.

External validation is a great way to improve rigor in neuroimaging. Although a simple idea is simple—test a predictive model on another dataset—the practice is not. In our Perspective in @naturemethods, we discuss these limitations and offer solutions: nature.com/articles/s41592-0…

3/ External validation should not be treated as a check box for publication. It is part of the study design and should be carefully planned. When done well, it improves rigor. Yet, poorly designed external validations hurt the field and can be worse than no external validation.

Posting on behalf of the semi-X-less @sNeuroble ! So excited to share: What started with fMRI effect size benchmarks ended up showing that conventional study planning detects ~half of expected brain effects, suggesting more distributed processes than the lit shows🧠
