During the 1860s, Lord Palmerston, commissioned a fortress to protect the harbour entrance after fearing invasion by the French. Work began on Newhaven Fort in 1864 and was designed by Lieutenant Ardagh, who was just 22 years old at the time. Photo from @newhaventc's website.
