As a 54yo Gen X vet, we grew up forced outside—playing sports, running around, church/kid clubs. It built mind, body & soul. Then late '90s/early 2000s: "Just walk 10k steps or do housework. Rigorous exercise? Optional." Fitness trackers, body positivity pushed "obesity is healthy." Relax & love yourself.
We knew better. New studies prove it: 1 min vigorous activity (playing with kids, sports, intense efforts) = 4-9 min or more of moderate (or way more light). Huge drops in cancer, diabetes, heart disease, dementia risks.
Old advice relied on questionnaires, not real outcomes. Exploding chronic disease rates showed the failure. Any movement helps (get those steps!) but we need to push kids (and ourselves) back to real play & rigor. Lives depend on it.
