When Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the World Cup opener, much of Africa didn't mourn - they celebrated. The hashtag said it all: "Mexico versus xenophobia." A continent tired of anti-migrant violence in South Africa turned football into a political statement.

Why did many Africans back Mexico? Recurring xenophobic attacks (2008, 2015, 2019, 2020s), 669 deaths linked to violence (1994-2024), anti-migrant groups demanded deportations before the tournament. Not all Africans agreed.

But for many, the message seemed to be that xenophobia is losing the match. Does football protest create real accountability? Or does it fade when the tournament ends? #2026WorldCup #PanAfricanism #Xenophobia

Recent violence targeting Orthodox Christians in Arsi has rightly generated calls for justice. Every attack on innocent people deserves condemnation. But this should prompt broader reflection.

Ethiopia has experienced multiple episodes of mass violence, including the killings in Aksum. Concern for human life must be consistent. If we demand accountability for victims today, we should also seek truth and justice for victims of past atrocities.

Ethiopia's military has been a central political actor across five regimes: imperial, Derg, EPRDF, and now Prosperity Party. My research argues this isn't episodic, it's structural. A thread on "foundational fusion" and the security dilemma in multinational federalism.

Under the Prosperity Party, politicization becomes more visible and personalized, not a rupture but a shift in modality (Gebrewold & Yoseph 2022). Depoliticization would require renegotiating Ethiopia's constitutional foundations, not just administrative reform.

Canada's Alberta may hold a consultative vote on independence (Oct 19, 2026). But Canada's constitution recognizes no unilateral right to secede. The Clarity Act requires a "clear majority" & federal approval. Source: BBC Amharic; Clarity Act, S.C. 2000, c. 26.

Lencho Leta remains one of the most influential figures in modern Oromo politics. As a founding intellectual of the Oromo Liberation Front, he helped transform Oromo identity into an organized political movement with international visibility.

He shaped debates on self-determination, federalism, democracy, equality among nations and nationalities, and later advocated peaceful political engagement within Ethiopia’s constitutional framework.

Supporters see him as a key architect of modern Oromo political thought and multinational democracy in Ethiopia. Regardless of political perspective, his influence on Oromo nationalism and Ethiopian federal politics remains significant. #MultinationalFederalism #Ethiopia
