When experimenting with a Raspberry Pi, it's easy to forget "what you changed" before it even works. Three things are enough to keep in your notes: โœ… โ‘  Wiring Note which pins you connected to. Leave short VCC, GND, and signal wires. โœ… โ‘ก Changed Settings Speed, angle, threshold, file name. It's helpful to leave it in a way that allows you to revert later. โœ… โ‘ข Next Steps Write down one thing you'll try first next time, or any areas that still seem suspicious. When camera footage is slow on a Raspberry Pi, it's easier to break it down into smaller settings than to fix the code from scratch. Check three things: โ‘  Resolution: Larger images require more processing. First, check if it works with a smaller resolution. โ‘ก Frame Rate: The smoother the image, the more frames are processed. โ‘ข Separate Display and Processing: Determine whether the load is from simply displaying the image or from the recognition processing. One of the surprisingly difficult aspects of robot cars is dealing with obstacles not directly in front, but diagonally in front. If you only look straight ahead, you're likely to overlook objects slightly to the side. There are three key points to consider: โœ… โ‘  Camera field of view: Check how far the camera can see and where it goes out of sight. โœ… โ‘ก Judgment area: Do you look at the entire screen, or just a portion of what's in front? This significantly impacts the robot's movement. โœ… โ‘ข Avoidance direction: Do you simply stop, turn slightly, or use reverse? Diagonally in front is a difficult area to judge, even if it seems visible. When a robot car isn't moving properly, it's easier to check the control system rather than just the control itself. I look at it in three parts: โœ… โ‘  Can it see? Are the sensors and cameras actually seeing the obstacle? It can't avoid things it can't see, so first check the input side. โœ… โ‘ก Is it making a judgment? Near, far, stop, turn. Look at the logs to see which conditions it's using to make a judgment. It's easier to fix if you keep track of the judgment thresholds rather than just looking at the movement. โœ… โ‘ข Is it moving? Even if the judgment is correct, the result will be off if the motor or servo movement is delayed.
