Interesting that @DPJHodges reports Reform are moving into reverse gear in Makerfield, as expectation management kicks in with Labour 4/1 on to win. For Reform’s selection to include a few duds in a general election, where they have 650 candidates to vet, would be perfectly understandable. But this is arguably the most important electoral contest in their short history, and they only had to vet one candidate. Despite this, they chose a guy who clearly has a very limited grasp of key political issues, and they didn’t properly research his past social media. Maybe they can still defy the polls but it looks like Reform’s lack of professionalism is going to cost them the seat. If it does, I hope they look after Rob when his 6 weeks of fame come to an end. It won’t be easy for him after this. Even if one agrees with Reform’s politics, this shows how far they have to travel before they can be considered as an outfit capable of governing the country.

I'm very sad to hear of Roy Hattersley's death. Here he is (in a programme about Dr Who of all things) explaining that it's natural to think the BBC is biased against you, but you'll always be wrong.

The programme is the excellent "What Lies Beneath" produced by my colleagues Steve Broster and Richard Molesworth and is available as part of the Season 7 Dr Who Blu-Ray collection!

“Our future is lost”, apparently, unless people vote Reform in Makerfield to increase their parliamentary tally to a colossal 9. That’ll save us. Don’t vote for Andy Burnham because he’s “nakedly ambitious”. Vote instead for the party of … err … Robert Jenrick.
Dear electorate of #Makersfield This time next week.... By voting for the nakedly ambitious #AndyBurnham: You are voting to prop up a corrupt and failing @UKLabour government who show only contempt for us By voting for @RestoreBritain: You are voting by proxy for the nakedly ambitious #AndyBurnhamto to prop up a corrupt and failing @UKLabour government who show only contempt for us. Vote @reformparty_uk Or our future is lost

Since the WASPI campaign is back in the news, a reminder of who Andy Burnham is proposing to give public money to. This person believes she has suffered an injustice because she incorrectly budgeted for her state pension at 60 to cover some expenses in her property portfolio.

Not often one to agree with the Greens, and of course we all know they’re not promoting this for the right reasons, but … … in a couple of generations’ time, people will not believe that we were still legally mutilating new born babies for no medical reason, as recently as 2026.
EXCL: The Green party is considering a new policy to ban circumcision, The Spectator can reveal. The party’s Health Policy Working Group (HPWG) has launched a consultation seeking views on whether parents should only be allowed to consent ‘to an irreversible surgical procedure on a child if that procedure is medically necessary’. Circumcision is an integral part of Judaism, with Jewish boys traditionally undergoing a ‘brit milah’ on the eighth day after birth. Interestingly, the consultation on outlawing the practice was publicised specifically in a ‘Greens for Palestine’ WhatsApp group.

Watching ITV’s coverage of Scotland 3-2 Holland in 1978, on @ITVX. Cloughie in the studio saying Scotland had no chance (obviously because Robertson & Burns dropped) and was equally curmudgeonly after the match. What an anus he was.

Just like the good old days!
This year’s World Cup, already full of controversy, is being held across an unprecedented three countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada. ITV's coverage will be based in Brooklyn with a view of the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline, while the BBC's fallen king Gary Lineker will be perched above Times Square making podcasts for his wealthy new paymasters at Netflix. It is only the BBC itself which is stuck in the UK, with presenters and pundits based in Salford and a giant panoramic screen to make up for the lack of a real view. Match of the Day's Kelly Cates told the Guardian she was ‘a little bit disappointed’ to be in Greater Manchester rather than Manhattan but consoled herself by thinking they’re ‘going to be in that slightly unreal, middle-of-the-night, mad World Cup kick-off time zone’ with all the rest of us. ✍️ Roger Mosey Article | spectator.com/article/why-th…

I first read this as “Labour delays ‘Leave Britain Week’” and assumed it meant they were postponing the next budget.
It is a mark of shame for this Labour government that we’re still waiting for the Defence Investment Plan. Even worse that reports say it won’t be funded properly. It has been over a year since the government concluded its review of our armed forces. The investment plan should have been published last autumn. The military is tearing its hair out waiting for Keir Starmer to make a decision. British jobs are on the line. Our national security is being undermined. Labour do not understand defence. The Conservatives were ready to send munitions and supplies to Ukraine at the start of that war. Keir Starmer has been caught on the back foot since the war in Iran began. I have said the next Conservative government will make sure we prioritise defence spending in a more dangerous world. We will reinstate the two child benefit cap, and use it to fund a larger military. And we will divert money away from Ed Miliband’s net zero projects and into a Strategic Defence Fund, capable of raising up to £50 billion for our armed forces. Labour only care about funding welfare, they cannot be trusted with our national security.

So the problem with most senior Labour figures finding excuses not to release their Mandelson messages (“my phone was stolen”, “the police wouldn’t let me “, “I was hoovering in the nude and then imagine my surprise when etc”) is that they have all put themselves back in the power of the Prince of Darkness himself, who can now just leak whichever, and from whomever, messages he chooses.

Happy resignationversary @ZiaYusufUK 🎂 That time a year ago when you said that working to get a Reform government elected was 'no longer a good use of my time'. One of the few times I've agreed with you. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq54…

This, from @matthewsyed. If you think it’s difficult for the BBC, Sky & ITV (full to overflowing with Oxbridge graduates) to tread the line when facing a thousand daily accusations of bias, imagine for one moment being a policeman, faced with the same problem.
"It is outrageous this idea that you cannot be English or British because of your ethnicity." Sunday Times columnist Matthew Syed, who won a gold medal for England, tells #Newsnight that he finds the idea "profoundly divisive".

Even if Reform keep their lead, one wonders how many seats they can win in a GE if Restore take 20% of their vote and the other parties tactically coalesce. Particularly if LD & Labour voters can bring themselves to vote Tory in the shires.
Makerfield By-Election Update: survation.com/makerfield-by-… Survation conducted a new poll of the Makerfield constituency. Fieldwork was conducted by telephone among 518 adults in the constituency between 26th May and 1st June 2026. A combination of landline and mobile data were used. Methodology Statement Population Sampled: All residents aged 18 living in the Makerfield parliamentary constituency. Total Sample Size: 518 Data Collection Method: Telephone interview. A combination of landline and mobile data were used. Fieldwork Dates: 26th May – 1st June 2026 Data Weighting: Data were weighted to the profile of all adults in Makerfield constituency aged 18 . Data were weighted by age, sex, ward and 2024 General Election vote. Targets for the weighted data were derived from Office for National Statistics data and the results of the 2024 UK General Election. Margin of Error: Because only a sample of the full population was interviewed, all results are subject to a margin of error. For example, in a question where 50% gave a particular answer, with a sample of 518 it is 95% certain that the “true” value would fall within 4.8 percentage points of the sample result. Headline by-election voting intention - Table V2 (likelihood-weighted, undecided/refused removed, no squeeze): Candidate / Party / Vote share Andy Burnham - Labour 49% Robert Kenyon - Reform UK 39% Rebecca Shepherd - Restore Britain 8% Sarah Wakefield - Green Party 2% Jake Austin - Liberal Democrat 1% Michael Winstanley - Conservative 1% Another party <1% Base: likely voters, factored by likelihood to vote, with undecided and refused voters removed Data tables are available here: cdn.survation.com/wp-content…
