It is surprising that Sri K. Muraleedharan, an Ayyappa devotee himself, could support such a position. This raises serious questions about how the government views one of the country’s largest annual pilgrimages. One cannot help but wonder whether a similar approach would have been taken in the case of the religious observances of any other community. The government must urgently reconsider this stance and ensure adequate medical support for pilgrims. If it fails to do so, strong protests are bound to follow.
