A simple, cheap default modifier protects significant lost funds for most users, and if you're an advanced user (like bot operator) you can choose to turn it off. Solidity, don't over-optimize by making payable, which is not very common, the default.

You don't normally see companies solving problems that affect a small number of users significantly. I've spoken with many users impacted by this (mostly from WETH) and I never thought these assets would be recovered.
