Equaldex, a global database tracking LGBTQ rights, has been threatened with a ban in Russia. The government has demanded that content that “promotes LGBT relationships” be removed within 24 hours. If Equaldex does not comply — which it of course will not — it will be blocked.
Russia, which currently scores 23 out of 100 on Equaldex’s Equality Index, is one of the platform’s top 20 countries in terms of traffic. For Russia’s LGBTQ community, sites like Equaldex are a vital resource, and the Russian government is cutting off a lifeline.
