Did a couple of interviews today in solidarity with @defundlapolice - long story short, don't get fooled by "community policing"...

I’ve been contemplating the connections between the deprofessionalization of caring/pink collar jobs, such as the k12 educators mentioned below, and extending that to pernicious erosion of status of teaching and learning staff in Canadian higher ed through #StudentsAsPartners 🧵
Because teaching has been historically perceived as “women’s work,” and women have gotten the shit end of the labor stick for basically ever.

Excited to share my paper now out in the Canadian Journal of Criminology and Criminal Justice focused on how the portrayal of police use of force in reality television contributes to broader narratives surrounding crime!

I find that force and excessive force are portrayed frequently, with significant racial disparities in excessive force. This is my first sole-authored publication and represents just over 2 years of work! Read here (or dm for pdf): utpjournals.press/toc/cjccj/…

Opinion | Too much academic research is jargon-laden mush. Here’s why my Substack is all amateur sociology with a lot of buzzwords I learned in college.

Along with some incredible other scholars (@tariajadi, @anita_acai, @DrPatMaher) I'm running for the STLHE Board of Directors–with a shared vision for emphasizing meaningful anti-racist action in Canadian higher education.

We believe in the power of STLHE to bring together practitioners and scholars, and also to influence the broader landscape of Canadian PSE. However, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done–we must critique awards systems, student representation, conferences, and more.

By running together, we hope to make change greater than we could from the outside or any one of us from the inside. If you are a STLHE member and wish to see the organization prioritize anti-racist work, please consider voting for the four of us together.

So, that opportunity I mentioned is this: I'm running for the STLHE Board of Directors alongside a few friends (@ethan_pohl, @DrPatMaher, @anita_acai) with a shared vision to shift STLHE towards meaningful anti-racist work in teaching and learning. #STLHESAPES2022

Don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't do anything with a Sociology degree
13 years after entering the NBA, Stephen Curry is a college grad. Stephen completed his final semester of coursework this spring and will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Sociology from Davidson College. Congrats to the Class of 2022!

This one's spicy...extremely excited to see this published after years of work with incredible collaborators @tariajadi, @heathercurrll, Théo, Jason, Maureen, and Christl. We explore the joy, disappointment, solidarity, and dismissal experienced when creating anti-racist demands.
