Many of you will have seen the news about Omar Artan.
After making history as the first Somali referee selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup, Omar has been told he will no longer be able to take part in the tournament after complications in entering the United States.
For most people, that’s just a headline. For referees, it’s heartbreaking.
Reaching a World Cup as a match official doesn’t happen by chance. It takes years of sacrifice, commitment, fitness, travel and outstanding performances. To earn a place on football’s biggest stage is the dream of many referees around the world, and Omar achieved that through his hard work and dedication.
Whatever the circumstances, it’s impossible not to feel for someone who has worked their entire career for this moment.
From everyone at A&H, we stand with Omar Artan and send him our support during what must be an incredibly difficult time.
