Writing in 1979, science fiction author Gordon R. Dickson looked ahead to 2050 to describe the evolution of the programmable calculator into a general purpose tool that was the size of a typical handheld device. It was a powerful general purpose computer that had a built-in AI (Siri/Alexa) assistant, was integrated into the global data/communication network, supported voice and keyboard input, and had all of the PDA tools such as calendars and to-do lists. The only thing he missed was a touch screen; his device had a keyboard-screen configuration.
