When FIFA announced the change, it said the breaks were for “player welfare,” but many fans saw through the spin and assumed the breaks would be used by broadcasters to show commercials.
On Thursday, Fox, which holds the English-language U.S. broadcast rights, confirmed those fears.
It not only cut away to advertisements; during the second half of Mexico-South Africa, its commercials ran long and caused viewers to miss several seconds of action after play resumed. The blunder sparked an uproar among longtime fans.

I hope to read many more stories about empty stadiums in the US for @FIFAWorldCup games. Boycotting is a strong tactic. Referees should be threatening it, too, after the Omar Artan debacle. But solidarity in professional football appears to have been erased.

Seriously, at this point the USA, as a @FIFAWorldCup host, is an absolute racist disgrace. I hope the IOC is watching as we'll have this all over again in a couple of years. Never again should the USA be allowed to host major sporting events.

Félicitations à la FIFA pour avoir attribué la Coupe du Monde à un pays capable de retenir pendant 7 heures un joueur qui n’a jamais fait parler de lui autrement que par ses performances sur le terrain.
Quand le meilleur buteur de l’Irak, qualifié pour le plus grand événement sportif de la planète, peut être traité comme un suspect à son arrivée, difficile de ne pas s’interroger sur l’accueil qui sera réservé à certaines sélections (Iran) et à leurs supporters.
Pendant des années, chaque aspect de l’organisation au Qatar a été scruté, commenté et critiqué. J’espère que les États-Unis feront l’objet du même niveau d’exigence et de la même couverture médiatique.

I still think this would be a better way to conduct penalty shootouts. Not sure why there is so much opposition to it. Tests key skills of the sport, rather than the straight-up lottery we currently have.
