For eight years, we talked about potential. And about Friday, June 12, 2026, as the moment this USMNT would have to meet. On a near-perfect night at SoFi, they met it, and maybe, just maybe, took U.S. men's soccer into a new era. Column @TheAthletic: nytimes.com/athletic/7356537…

“I mean, my whole life I feel like I’ve envisioned it,” Chris Richards said the World Cup opener on home soil. “But tonight was way better than what I could’ve envisioned. It was surreal.”

Gio Reyna just said his wife, Chloe, is pregnant. Seriously. He'd been waiting for the right moment to announce it, and decided this — a goal in the World Cup opener — was it.

Got emotional walking through the concourse, seeing so many people, from many different backgrounds, giddy for U.S. soccer. Yes, this is an exclusive event and FIFA priced out lots of folks. But damn, this is cool

Tonight, America will learn about Mauricio Pochettino, the most accomplished coach the USMNT has ever had. How did U.S. Soccer get (and pay for) him? In the most American way possible: rich people. (w/ @PaulTenorio) nytimes.com/athletic/7337564…

There is a World Cup game in the United States today. Incredible. And @TheAthletic's coverage is unparalleled. I promise you. So much going on, and my brain works so methodically, that I haven't had time to promote much of it. But please go find it. And follow along tonight.

FIFA (supposedly) has rules for broadcasters during World Cup hydration breaks. Fox broke them during the very first game, and even missed match action showing commercials... nytimes.com/athletic/7352632…

If you can look beyond the ugliness, the craven administrators, the sportswashing, the skullduggery and the exploitation of fans, there is beauty to be found. At its highest level, football’s appeal is self-perpetuating. The more it matters, the more it matters. There is a reason why, if and when a goal is scored in the opening game between Mexico and South Africa on Thursday afternoon, TV directors will focus on the scenes of agony and ecstasy both on the pitch and in the stands at Estadio Azteca. Those raw emotions and moments of shared experience, which can be so hard to find in a fractured society, will be replicated all over the world in the coming weeks, bring families, communities and entire nations together, uniting them in hope, joy and of course despair. @OliverKay explains why, like it or not, a World Cup is the biggest show on planet Earth.
