We welcome the news Springer will not be publishing the article in question, but our demands are unmet. How did things get this far in the first place? This isn’t about one article—we need to truly abolish the #TechToPrisonPipeline. See/sign bit.ly/TechToPrisonPipeline for more.

Excited to see this out by some fantastic authors and friends of @forcriticaltech - how to defund big tech and refund communities in a broader move to tackle monopolies through community centric approaches
It's live! In collaboration with Lucy Suchman, @ChriBecker @EJ_Cheon Wolmet Barendregt, Andrew Clement and @doug_schuler we are excited to release the "Defund Big Tech, Refund Community: Another Tech is Possible" report techotherwise.pubpub.org/def… #TechOtherwise

Check out: Defund Big Tech, Refund Community techotherwise.pubpub.org/pub… for a great break-down of the myths underlying Silicon Valley's massive and expanding monopolies on wealth and infrastructure, and the urgent need to redistribute that $ and infra back to communities

Refunding community implies assuming greater shared responsibility for all aspects of the technology life-cycle, from concept and design to deployment, redesign, repair and retirement...

Now is the time to radically redirect the future of tech, by reclaiming the purposes of technology development, and redistributing the associated responsibilities and benefits, in the service of our collective and sustainable well being."

Google has chosen to dismantle its AI ethics work, making it clear that the company will only tolerate research that supports its bottom line. This is a matter of urgent public concern. #MakeAIEthical 1/35 bit.ly/MakeAIEthical

"Too valuable to fire", only applies when your offense offends the right groups. For years Timnit has consistently set the bar and shaped the course of AI. Power begets power and for some asking the wrong questions is sin enough.
Apparently my manager’s manager sent an email my direct reports saying she accepted my resignation. I hadn’t resigned—I had asked for simple conditions first and said I would respond when I’m back from vacation. But I guess she decided for me :) that’s the lawyer speak.

Just like that, Google lost the little legitimacy it had. @timnitGebru has been nothing but the ideal role model for Black women, an aspiration, and a towering figure that keeps pushing the whole field of AI ethics to respectable standard.
Let me be very careful since I know what I'm dealing with and they can use everything I say against me.

We stand in solidarity and full support of @timnitGebru
.@timnitGebru is not only a pillar of our community, she’s the reason many next generation engineers, data scientists and more are inspired to work in tech. It’s now our job to support her.

Stop. @WIRED given the resounding scholarly rejection of this kind of dangerous and pseudoscientific ML research (thanks to people like @Abebab, @forcriticaltech, @annaeveryday, @luke_stark and many others) why are you still breathlessly platforming these baseless claims?

Being able to read body language is an essential human skill. Soon, it might be one for robots, too. Researchers have developed an algorithm that analyzes and guesses how you’re feeling purely by the way you walk: wired.trib.al/eUmHucR
