Ever since I heard that @JanorMannWen had bought a copy of our game Perilous Pond, I've felt a bit bad that I hadn't manage to get his #18xx game 18SJ to the table. Yesterday we finally managed to get it set up and learn (most of) the rules!

Hi Lea! Nice of you to pile on. I have absolutely nothing against gender neutral language. I am however against outsiders doing drive-by PRs with ideological motivations. If a regular contributor hade made these edits, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. Could I have communicated this better in 2021? You bet. And FWIW my post today was unrelated to anything happening on Mastodon. I only learned about it when people started harassing my friends and coworkers.

When I saw @awesomekling’s post about Mastodon vs Twitter in my feed I thought “Hmm, I enjoy both” and moved on. A bit later, I read a few toots and pieced the context together. TL;DR: People todaynoticed that in 2021 @awesomekling closed a PR¹ with this tiny change: The reason given: “This project is not an appropriate arena to advertise your personal politics.” Lolwut? My dude, using “he” accidentally for someone of unknown gender happens to many of us. But doubling down on it is advertising YOUR personal politics. The singular “they” has been in use since the 14th century² and is the correct way to refer to someone of unknown gender. Educate yourself ffs. If you still don’t get it, maybe try to imagine reading these instructions if they used “she”. Such a bummer. I, like many others, was excited to see an independent browser being developed.
