World Cup early thoughts: I don’t particularly mind the expansion of the World Cup per se as it’s ultimately just more football but… It’s no surprise that the most interesting games to watch have been Morocco v Brazil and Japan Netherlands. The first particularly weak teams are just going to skew the tournament stats for anyone who gets to play them. The time zones are what they are, same as 2002, it’s just a World Cup where we’ll see less football. 4 years time it’ll be better for us and worse for other parts of the world. It’s a world game. Seeding all 3 home nations first is crazy. IMO each team should be moved up just one position from their natural seeding position. Destroys their groups otherwise. Was more bearable when there was a singular host nation. Hydration breaks are fine for when matches are played in particularly high temperatures (as has always been the case) but otherwise FIFA should’ve just been honest and said we’re Americanising the games for smaller attention spans and ad revenue. Refereeing and VAR standard has been better than the Premier League (of course) It’s easy to moan about things that are different to what we’re used to. As the tournament goes on we’ll, undoubtedly, see more competitive games and I’m sure I’ll become more enthusiastic! Don’t give up hope just yet…
