Finland’s decline is a cautionary tale for anyone espousing progressive education or constructivist methodology.
I didn't realize this: Finland, which used to be the absolute star in the West on education, is now on math roughly at the OECD average, only a bit higher than the US (meaning way behind New England), and fell 60 pts in 20 years, worst in the world. What happened?!

I’ve rarely seen this feeling so well and so concisely put.
Sometimes the broiling sea of imbecility gets too much. Wave upon wave of cretins.

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack. Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections. Now Virginia has a chance to help level the playing field. If you live in the Commonwealth, early voting begins March 6, and Election Day is on April 21. Vote YES.

Fascinating 🎧 and highlights a key issue in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿: the vast majority of primaries continue to head down the inquiry-based learning rabbit hole; secondaries are then having to pick up the pieces and deliver a purposeful, knowledge-rich curriculum with teaching based on the SoL.
What meaningful opportunities do learners have to apply their critical thinking? Listen to a special edition episode of our podcast, Sgwrs, discussing the cross-cutting theme of developing independent learners from our annual report: bit.ly/3Oq3UEe

Would Witkoff give ISIS this much sympathy? Putin chose this war: invading, stealing children, destroying communities, executing civilians and POWs, and bombing cities on an industrial scale we haven’t seen in Europe since WWII. Witkoff, this war is “Silly”

The tragedy is that we absolutely know how to solve this problem. It's hard work, but not rocket science. Children need to be taught habits of successful behaviour, clear boundaries, and predictable consequences. They need to know that the adults in the room with them are in charge, and that they care for them.
Scotland now has the highest rate of violent school injuries in Britain. The SNP’s experiment in “soft-touch” discipline is failing staff and pupils alike.

Hello - I wrote a new blog about the teaching of whole class reading, which I haven't in a while. It's over 9000 words so quite a read, but I hope the comprehensive nature of it comes across as helpful, rather than patronising. Anyway - hope it's useful! mrboothy6.wordpress.com/2025…

The reason why terminal, externally assessed, standardised exams are the best way to judge a student’s competence is because all the other options- coursework, teacher assessment etc are far, far worse. Especially now that AI can write anything for you at home
I was an astonished when I discovered as an adult that some countries did *not* do this. This is like measuring your height every day for ten years through adolescence and using the average to decide if you get to ride Space Mountain.

Inside Trump’s ‘Royal Court’ nytimes.com/2026/02/20/opini… The most appalling thing about this conversation is the light-heartedness with which these two take Trump's indifference to lies as some sort of interesting aspect of his presidency rather than the catastrophic overthrow of America democracy and the corrupt degradation of the Presidential office; the normalisation of a moral monstrosity.
