Books, nice dinners &rage about the state of things. George as in The Famous Five. A Picador (& thus Pan Macmillan) person but all views remain entirely my own.

I often miss my life-enhancing, insanely generous & frequently infuriating mother. Never more so than now. Were she reading this, I have no doubt her response would be, ‘Don’t be fucking silly, darling. Now pull yourself together.’ Here she is, in typical pose.

This is utter balls. The South Bank was not no go in the 1980s. And though there were then - and before then and since then - parts of London that were dodgy and best avoided late at night, this is true of every major city.
George is so right. Also, 30 years there were areas in London, such as Southbank and many others, that were no-go. Nowadays, the misinformation about London is beyond belief. London is v expensive, yes, but the best and greatest big city in the world, by far. And I travel…a lot!

Memo to Labour's top table: you won because voters were sick of the Tories, not because they thought you would deliver Tory policies more efficiently. They wanted a fairer country. You have broken their hopes. Unforgiveable..

No, the meeting did not go badly for Ukraine. It exposed in the most undeniable, unequivocal way possible the pro-Putin commitments of the president and vice president. That was information Americans and allies needed to have clear before them.

I’ve been on this beat my whole career. And I recognize a line of reasoning that I’ve encountered time and time again: that if you’re incredibly rich, cruel, or clever, the world can be your loophole. theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

This is a five alarm fire. The people elected Donald Trump to be President - not Elon Musk. Having an unelected billionaire, with his own foreign debts and motives, raiding US classified information is a grave threat to national security. This should not be a partisan issue.
Breaking: WASHINGTON (AP) — USAID security chiefs on leave after trying to prevent Musk's DOGE from accessing classified material, officials say.

It now appears, HMS Agincourt was blocked by the King who wanted a different name The last Tory govt knew this but "kicked the paperwork down the road" for the Labour govt Could the attack below possibly be entirely disingenuous and opportunistic?
Renaming the HMS Agincourt is nothing short of sacrilege. This submarine carries a name that honours a defining moment in British history. Under Labour, woke nonsense is being put ahead of tradition and our Armed Forces' proud heritage. thesun.co.uk/news/33016725/r…

Augustus John - born on this day 4 Jan 1878 . Flukily gifted, ultimately damaged and oh so fascinating to write about.

And there’s this. Given he’s a member of the shadow cabinet - we must assume this is the agreed view of all Con shadow ministers and the Parly party at large. Really? @VictoriaAtkins @MelJStride @TomTugendhat @carolinenokes
This is appalling dog-whistle, fishing for support at the bottom of the pond, unsubstantiated b*llocks. If it were true, Jenrick or a fellow Conservative Minister or a Con MP would have acted on it during the 14 years they were in Government.

Not that anyone would care, but I'm going to be spending less time here and much more on the increasingly excellent and El0n-free lookalike. You can find me @georgeisediting.bsky.social

Trump winning demonstrates that it wasn’t enough for the Dems to “not be the bad guy” to beat him this time. They needed a radical, positive vision for an increasingly unstable world. The Labour government must take note.

On such days the immortal words in 2002 of former Whitehall permanent secretary Sir Richard Mottram re-echo down the ages: “We're all fucked. I'm fucked. You're fucked. We're all completely fucked.”
