Leaders crossed a major hurdle at #EUCO by adopting conclusions that confirm the 2040 #climate target contributes to competitiveness and prosperity. President Costa managed to rein in populist attempts to weaken existing climate laws or to derail the conversation entirely.
My 2 cents on the EU-Central Asia Summit. This is a key opportunity for the EU to reinforce its role as a “trusted partner. To become a more consistent partner, 🇪🇺 needs to push for concrete and tangible projects that benefit local value creation beyond EU security of supply
Great to be back at #BETD25 to discuss green energy diplomacy with many colleagues! 🇪🇺EU needs to step up mutually beneficial collaborations which create local value, beyond the security of supply. As @climatemorgan stated "we are only as strong as our partnerships are".
Great to see the 🇪🇺 @EU_Commission stepping up its partnership with 🇰🇿Kazakhstan in the area of renewable energy and CRM. As recommended in a @Clingendaelorg report, investing in local clean industry is key for the competitiveness of both partners⬇️ clingendael.org/publication/…
Modern economies depend on reliable partners for both resources and connections. In this sense, the partnership with 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan is a natural fit — built on shared ambitions and expertise.
Today in Astana, we signed two agreements that will allow us to advance our cooperation even further:
✔️ A Critical Raw Materials partnership with the EBRD to support sustainable and innovative mining and processing — creating skilled jobs and local value chains that benefit both Kazakhstan and Europe.
✔️ A €200 million loan agreement between the European Investment Bank and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan — investing in renewable energy and modern transport infrastructure that will connect Kazakhstan even more closely to Europe and Asia.
Together, through Global Gateway, we are building a partnership that delivers real results — for Kazakhstan’s growth and for Europe’s energy transition.
🚨Energy crisis is the (new) buzzword in the🇪🇺EU as gas prices rose to a two-year high. But wasn't the energy crisis already gone? Who's fault is this?
It is time energy stakeholders accept geopolitics as a primary feature in energy scenarios

🚨🇪🇺EU gas storage levels are officially below the 50% threshold, the level is very concerning.
🥶Temperatures are chillier. Low wind energy output is increasing gas use in power generation.
📈This morning, prices reached over €58/MWh, the highest since February 2023.

⛽️ Europe’s soaring gas prices are making it more cost-effective to burn oil for industrial use, potentially boosting the region’s demand for barrels.

I deeply regret the U.S. decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports.
The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests.
We will protect our workers, businesses and consumers ↓

➡️ To be successful, EU policymakers need to improve the positive presence of the EU in Central Asia by showcasing a long-term commitment and prioritising the EU-Central Asia Summit. 4/5
➡️ The EU should act more geopolitical by increasing its cooperation with Central Asian countries with tangible projects, such as with bilateral Team Europe Initiatives on green energy and water. 5/5
