Fiscal rules are relatively new. They didn't exist until the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. They spread across the globe following neoliberal politics. They are purely political in nature and are not based on any solid economics.
The deficit should be as large/small as it needs to be to achieve full employment and prevent demand-driven inflation.
That is its sole purpose. Curtailing it through arbitrary fiscal rules is causing an economic crisis.
@Southclaws I just read your post about error handling in Go - the context bit in particular seems like a good insight
The resulting code ends up looking a lot like how OTel tracing gets used
We’ve been honeycomb users for a bunch of years using their “beeline” lib, and the pattern we end up with is:
- add fields to context to identify what’s being processed
- attach errors if they happen, prefer low-cardinality error strings so we can group-by for analysis
@colmmacc hello! Not sure if this is a good medium for the question, but do you know if AWS plans to offer any newer cipher suite options for ALBs?
We just had some ciphers flagged as weak on a security audit, but the newest option is a set from 2021
90% of PR reviews:
- You've been a bit lazy here, be a little less lazy?
- Thank you for calling me out on my laziness, I knew it was lazy – I will do this properly now
i feel like 80% of why people feel "js moves too fast, can't get my old projects to build" is because too many people in charge believe semver autoupgrading is a good idea
Update: Ad board in cycle lane on Sheaf Street 🚴♀️

Beware of (automated) systems that make easy problems easier while making hard problems even harder: you often don’t learn about this trade-off until it’s too late.
Number 2:
The product of software engineering teams is shared understanding.
This one might take a bit more exposition. But *understanding* the problem and the solution is what software engineers do -- that, and then making it understandable *for each other*.
Do train drivers deserve to earn £60,000 after overtime and working rest days? With me in the studio to discuss this are a £91,000 a year Tory MP, a £200,000 a year rightwing journalist and a chief executive on £4.2m.
Nigel farage wants you to think that Britain has an immigration problem.
It doesn't.
Britain had a problem with millionaires hoarding wealth, egged on by politicians and the press.
Britain has a problem with racism.
Britain has a @Nigel_Farage problem.
RT if you agree.
We must scrap the inhuman Work Capability Assessments and private provision of disability assessments (e.g. ATOS), scrap punitive sanctions, two-child limit and benefits cap.
AMBULANCE being written backwards on the hood of the vehicle so you can read it in the mirror sounds SO clever until you try and imagine someone who can read the word “AMBULANCE” but doesn’t know what an AMBULANCE looks or sounds like.
