I’m thrilled to announce that after thoughtful planning and prayerful consideration, the Stand to Reason board has unanimously approved our senior apologist @AlanShlemon as STR’s President-Elect. For more than three decades, Stand to Reason has been helping people think more clearly about what they believe and why it matters. What began as a simple commitment to use my gifts as effectively as possible has grown into a dynamic spiritual enterprise that has reached millions of people around the globe through conversations, teaching, writing, and relationships. Along the way, many of you have become part of that story with us, and I’m deeply grateful for the encouragement, prayers, and support you’ve given to STR over the years. Now we are stepping into an invigorating new season for Stand to Reason. This decision marks an important milestone in the life of our work—but also a natural and strategically wise next step towards STR’s future. Alan has been a major player on our team for more than two decades. Many of you already know him through his speaking, writing, and years of faithful and productive leadership with STR. He has worked closely with me over the years as a personal disciple playing a significant role in shaping the fine and productive organization we have become. More importantly, Alan deeply understands what I often call the “STR DNA.” His leadership, wisdom, and commitment to our mission make him uniquely suited to serve as President-Elect and lead STR into the future. I could not be more confident in Alan’s abilities or more excited about what lies ahead for our organization. Over the coming year, Alan and I will be working even more closely together. As part of a gradual transition, we’ll be sharing responsibilities and strengthening relationships throughout the STR community. This will be a season of growing partnership, thoughtful planning, and preparation for STR’s next chapter. I also want you to know that I’m not planning on going anywhere soon. I remain fully engaged and committed to the work and all executive aspects of STR. I care deeply about this organization, and I’ll be steadily investing in its health, in its relationships, and in its future. As we move into this next season of strategic planning, Alan will play a pivotal role in shaping our direction and priorities for growth. Together, we are strengthening STR’s leadership so the kingdom work we’ve been doing will continue developing with focus, reach, and effectiveness for decades to come. I’m convinced that STR’s most fruitful years are still ahead of us, and I’m grateful that you are on this journey with us as we move “onward and upward” toward the greater things God has for us as a community. Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers. More to come soon. Warmly, @gregkoukl

Sometimes we have this idea in our head that acts of good somehow outweigh the evil we do, but the Law requires that we keep it ALL consistently. We have softened things for our benefit, because we’re the criminals. We have a tendency to take a view that favors us and doesn’t understand God’s holiness properly. It isn’t giving our lives for someone else that earns us salvation. Rather, it is Jesus giving his life for us.

If you’re dismissing certain behaviors that are prohibited in the Old Testament (such as sexual sins) because it’s Old Testament, then how are you saying other of those behaviors (such as murder) are still wrong? I want to know the rationale. In fact, we have a rationale for that. You have to look at the context.

Marriage has been evacuated of anything that is normative, and now that’s the way people think about it. There’s a pushback against any normative standard at all—that men are men, and women are women, and sex is binary. The definitions have been twisted from an objective reference point to a completely subjective reference point—you do you. What should we as Christians do? Just like Jesus, we go back to the structure that God set up in the beginning—male and female, he created them. Are you willing to conform to God’s design the way he made it... the way he said it was good?

Here’s the conclusion of my series of “rapid-fire” responses to frequent challenges to Christianity: Intelligent design is just religion disguised as science, God is not a good father, evil proves God doesn’t exist, relativism doesn’t mean “anything goes,” and extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Israel has a special role. God said he’s not going to abandon them. It doesn't mean you can’t chastise them or say “I don’t agree with that policy,” but when you oppose Israel as Israel, then you’re opposing God’s purposes. Hear more at shr.link/5avmm.

Slippery slope arguments link one way of thinking to an unintended consequence that’s likely to follow. Some such appeals are faulty, but some are valid. Here’s the difference. Read my latest mentoring letter at shr.link/15ij0.

The legislating authority is the one who decides what is the appropriate punishment to establish justice. God is the one ultimately offended—he is the one whose law is broken—and if God deems a substitute like Jesus to be adequate payment for our sins, then justice has been satisfied. What’s the alternative? Either 1) We pay—there’s no forgiveness or mercy or 2) there’s no justice—everyone gets a free pass.
