For those that hope (or worry) that LLMs will do breakthrough scientific research, I've got good (or bad) news: LLMs are particularly, exceedingly, marvellously ill-suited to this task. (if you're a researcher, you'll have noticed this already) Here's why🧵

Just heard the sad news about Paul Auster. He wrote one of my favorite books: “The Book of Illusions”. It’s a story of a man who experienced a tragic loss and reconstructs himself by researching the work of a forgotten movie director. Auster invents and describes 1/2

entire movies that never existed and it’s just incredible. If you love books and movies, this one is for you! As usual you come out of this book with the impression of having read a much longer one because Auster created such “full” stories and characters. 2/2

Hi @eLife, going through recently advertised papers, I see that many say “All data generated or analyzed during this study are included in the manuscript…” but don’t share microscopy images even when it’s the core method of the paper. Doesn’t your policy consider images as data?

Regularly I see image processing code shared but without data (even just a sample) it’s quite useless. Sequencing, proteomics data etc. seem better handled so I’m wondering if image data sharing could be better enforced, especially as eLife is often an innovator in open science.

ipywidgets are a great tool with huge positive impact. But at the moment, the project is like a moving ship without a captain. It's public infrastructure that requires maintenance, and it needs financial support to be sustainable. A thread.

I’ll be there teaching! I highly recommend the school. With all the experienced bioimage analysts present, it’s often a way for participants to save weeks or months of work to create image analysis workflows for their projects!
