My review of the first 15 minutes of the game Roots of Embervault by
@RuyuiStudios
I honestly don’t understand what the game testers were doing. This is simply awful. Most of these issues become obvious within the first 15 minutes of gameplay, yet somehow none of them were even mentioned.
Charging $14 just to access the game, while justifying it with “tester reviews,” feels especially questionable when those reviews clearly ignore fundamental problems.
Audio:
Repetitive and monotonous music in the main location.
No basic sound effects: no proper hit sounds, no chest opening sounds, no door interaction sounds, etc.
The lack of audio feedback makes the game feel unfinished and lifeless.
Combat & Controls:
4-directional facing: if you’re even slightly mispositioned, you can’t hit enemies at all.
No diagonal interaction with mobs, making combat feel outdated and clunky.
Unreasonably strong early-game enemies: you run in → hit once → die → repeat. This feels punishing rather than challenging.
Spamming the Space key causes the character to move very fast, while the game starts lagging heavily and struggles with performance.
Map & Navigation:
Poorly designed minimap.
No large/world map.
No clear division of the world into distinct gameplay locations.
No clear or consistent quest markers on the minimap.
Quests & Dialogues:
Quests are poorly structured and hard to track.
Too many unnecessary dialogues that players want to skip.
Important gameplay information can easily be missed because it’s buried inside long dialogues that players instinctively skip.
Inventory:
Confusing inventory systems that rely only on icons, with no text explanations.
Laggy and unresponsive inventory UI.
Some inventory windows can only be closed with the mouse instead of the interaction key (E).
Certain UI elements cannot be closed with the Escape key, which feels inconsistent and unintuitive.
I think you should consider offering refunds to players who don’t want to play this obviously unfinished product.
