🎉 Congratulations to our April Foldscoper of the Month, Rafikh Shaikh! 🎉
💡 Rafikh is a lifelong learner and explorer with a deep curiosity for science, both in theory and in the rhythms of everyday life. As a learning scientist and naturalist, his work centers on understanding how people engage with science, especially through low-cost, culturally grounded tools that make learning more accessible and meaningful.
📚 His journey into research truly came alive during his PhD. While he had research experience during his Master's, it was only as a doctoral student that he encountered the full depth of authentic scientific inquiry. From asking purposeful questions to interpreting data with care, Rafikh embraced the process with integrity and passion.
✨ However, the moment that truly transformed his perspective was when he used a Foldscope for the first time. Although he had studied microbiology extensively, he had rarely observed live microorganisms. That changed with Foldscope. For the first time, he witnessed tiny life forms moving, interacting, and unfolding their worlds under the lens, and everything shifted.
🔍 He first learned about Foldscope through Manu Prakash’s TED Talk. Since then, it has become an essential part of his scientific life. Rafikh calls Foldscope not just a microscope, but a cultural tool of science, "as vital to learning and exploration as language is to thought". Foldscope empowers anyone, anywhere to see the invisible, question what they see, and become an investigator of the natural world.
